Meet the choreographer : September 13

The first company to tread the boards of the Agora stage this fall, Cas Public will be presenting a sort of exhilarating mass, an extraordinary ode to creation. This new piece, co-created by Hélène Blackburn and Pierre Lecours, combines the company dancers with several arts personalities such as Alexandre Désilets, Simon-Xavier Lefebvre, Sylvie Moreau, and Daniel Soulières. True as ever to a penchant for high-flying, energetic choreography, the company presents original encounters at the very limit of the unlikely – a dance master with a student, a singer who meets a dancer, an actress who transcends her partner’s movements. Consisting of some fifteen duos, with this piece Cas Public has achieved a veritable tour de force, cultivating the emblematic qualities of each individual in a composition of collective energy. Flitting between confrontation and encounter, each duo highlights a facet of this hybrid, all-out spectacle in a mosaic of duos framed by spare lighting and set design, artfully melding the bold, the spectacular and vibrant physical performances.
“The devil is in the bodies of the Cas Public troupe, more fast and furious than ever in this piece of a thousand and one fragments, exploring the tension between pleasure and pain.”
Frédérique Doyon, Le Devoir, 2008 (about Suites cruelles)
“A terrible beauty flooded the space. A raw, unsentimental charge of dark ecstasy that invited laughter and tears because it felt so real and honest. Blackburn is blessed with exceptionally talented dancers and musicians who are willing to go headlong off-road, as it were …”
Mary Brennan, The Herald, 2009 (about Suites cruelles)
